The bombings - Truus Tielemans

“I had no artistic skills. At the Catharina Lyceum I would rather be engaged in the debating club and debating competitions. Despite this I made a picture of the destruction of the Demer during Karel Vermeeren’s art class. I had classmates who lived there. I lived with my parents, brother and sister in the Tongelresestraat. My father was employed as a planner in the local authority and was also a member of the voluntary Fire Brigade. He saw a lot of bad things during the war. I remember very well that we spent a lot of the time in the shelter in our basement.” - Truus Tielemans
